2009

How do you sum up a year? Well, 2009 is almost over and for me it has been nothing short of remarkable. It was the year I finally became a full-time photographer, something I’ve been thinking about for a long time. I held on to my advertising career a little too long, afraid of letting go, scared something would go wrong. I remember the day I left my job. Jacqui and I had a client meeting the same night and I was relieved and scared shitless at the same time – finally the training wheels were off – time to prove I could do this.

And what a journey it has been.

I’ve met so many amazing people this year, both clients and other. I realise I have been lucky. Lucky because people seem to like what I do and lucky because I get to finally do something I love. Next year will in many ways be even crazier, but I will never forget the people of 2009, how you took me in and let me document your lives.

I owe you everything.

When I sat down to pick images for this post, I found it very difficult, mainly because like this, in a post, they lack context. I think all the images from a wedding belong together – they need each other. Without the moments in between many of them are just images. The story just isn’t there.

Anyway, here are some of my favorite shots of 2009.

And here’s to a great 2010.

  1. Athome, we’ve recently built the change to normal hand-sanitizer,
which we will have inside the automobile for that trip back from university and
    from play-dates.

  3. I know this is an old post, but your work is so inspiring and to think this was the first year as full time photographer. You have a brilliant eye for art and moments and even your writing is inspiring. Hats off!

  4. haha, it definitely wouldn’t be the same without the randomness of the speedo guy a few from the top, or the naked guy a few from the bottom…. plenty of great ones here, but i’m a sucker for that beautiful backlit hand holding shot.

  5. Glad I stumbled onto your blog. your work is really interesting, with a singular vision. that’s worth a lot when it comes to wedding photography. keep it up, and thanks.

  6. Jonas this is a beautiful set of images. I’m sure you know how proud you should be of what you’ve accomplished in your first year. The images are a fantastic combination of art, emotions and photojournalism. One shot I hadn’t seen before that I really love here is the one of the wedding dress hanging on the outdoor shower. I can’t wait to see what you come up with in 2010.

  7. Your photographs are truly amazing and inspiring. I love your perspective, your processing, and your technical skills are amazing. Congratulations on a wonderful year and here’s to a great 2010.
    Best, Stephanie

  8. i remember most of these photos, and love every single one. i can’t believe at this time last year i was savoring only non-wedding photos on this blog… like so many others, i’m so excited to see where you go next year with all this :) congratulations on 2009, and here’s to even better in 2010!

  9. The one with the wedding party standing on the rocks by the water is a great shot. Landscape and personality in one. And also the picture with the two swedish singers by the lake, that is amazing. Reminds me of home. Thank you.

  10. Wow.. it almost hurts to see how good you are when they’re all together like that! Congrats on a great year and I hope you enjoy your holidays with your family. Nice touch with the Christmas tree.

  11. Oh, so many of my favorites of yours here. I couldn’t ever narrow them down this much, but I’ve always loved the man shaving outdoors with the mirror, the poof of a dress, and the bride pinning the flower on her mom.

You included the man in the swimsuit – now where is the naked man climbing up the rocks in the background? Or was that 2008? *grin*

  12. #1, #4, #10, #26, #30, #34, #36 (something along that order anyway!) are the ones that have ALWAYS stood out for me from you so I’m glad you included them!
What an incredible year you have had, what an honour to have watched your journey!

  13. You are such a wonderful photographer. I so admire your work and I really cant get my head around it. Is it the motives or the technique you use? How do you do it?

  14. When I see your year’s work presented like this it clearly demonstrates how innovative you work is – some of it is not to my own personal taste (I don’t like that tilt shift thing – although that image of the group at the edge of the lake is way cool), but all of it makes me go wow. I think you’ve defined a new genre of Fine Art Wedding Photography. Well done.

  15. It has been an amazing year. I have enjoyed watching you grow into yourself. You have always managed to capture the moment in the most elegant and creative light. You are a true inspiration and I look forward to seeing what you create in 2010!

  16. talk about hard to pick a favorite… i can only image what you went through narrowing down your selection… if I had to do it I am sure this post would be about 50 times the size it is!!! =)

  17. You are truely amazing Jonas!! Congrats on such a fantastic, rewarding year for you. We are so lucky to have had you capture our day like you did. Here’s to a big 2010!!

  18. your work is amazing! The details in each picture are so cool, from the heart bokeh on the last one to the naked guy climbing the rocks??! (who does that, seems dangerous!) A great year of pictures!

  19. Looks like 2009 treated you well:) There’s nothing better than doing what you love most and I think this shines through your photos. Not only the photos in this blog post but all your photos.

I look forward to seeing a lot more of your great work in 2010.

  20. I always love your photography. These are absolutely beautiful art. You’ve inspired me to try do a wrap up blog too showcasing my favourites. Hope you don’t mind imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. :)

  21. Heaps of amazing shots, as expected of course. Actually, I believe I’ve seen ’em all already!? Anyways, I like the header Christmas tree! :)

  22. one day, i’d like to follow your footsteps and leave the advertising world behind. until then, i look forward to following your work and growth.

  23. Not too shabby ;~) I thoroughly enjoyed reviving my memories of each of these weddings looking through this review. I’ve been inspired by a good number of them in my own approach. I’d be fascinated to know what it is about each image that you particularly like (more writing! :~)

  24. So many amazing photos, Jonas. I adore the second one, which I haven’t seen before, the one of the girl with the blue eyes and butterfly clip and the bride in amongst the tree. Stunning!

And these photos DO tell a story, Jonas. They tell your story, one that I can’t wait to read more of in 2010.
