plastic fantastic

The better my cameras become, the more I feel the need to use crappy cameras on the side. I rarely whip out my Canon 5D Mark II if I want to take photos for fun, instead I rely on my Holga, Diana, SX-70 or my latest piece of plastic, the Zumi Digital. Life is surreal as it is, but through a plastic lens it quickly goes from strange to bizarre. A simple flight to Perth becomes a synopsis to a movie directed by David Lynch.

Eliza Claire Kent Photographer - I was thinking today about toy cameras (on the train to work, as you do…) and wondering what the attraction is. As photographers, we’re always looking for the best, the newest, the fastest. Faster glass, memory cards with ultra high speed, FPS, Flash Sync speed. Perhaps the real beauty of toy cameras is their ability to make us slow down. Sometimes we need to slow the f**k down and notice what’s around us.

I think your post illustrates my conclusions perfectly, even if they were taken at 30,000 ft at about 200mph!

Philip Smith - I have a couple of old cameras that do pretty much the same job. Also, my camera phone, which is so poor it has a really good look to it.
